Discord Mic Works in Test but Not in Calls: 10 Fixes

Discord’s Mic Test can play your voice back clearly, yet the moment you join a real call, nobody hears you. That seems contradictory, but the test and a live voice call do not check exactly the same things.

If your Discord mic works in the test but not in calls, the microphone hardware is usually not the main problem. Mic Test confirms that Discord can receive sound from the selected input.

A real call also depends on mute status, input mode, voice sensitivity, channel permissions, audio processing, and the device Discord uses while the call is active.

What to Try First

Before changing advanced settings:

1. Stop Mic Test completely.

2. Make sure the microphone icon is not crossed out.

3. Leave the call and join again.

4. Open User Settings, then Voice & Video, and select your microphone by its exact name.

5. Temporarily switch Input Mode to Voice Activity.

6. Fully quit Discord and reopen it.

After each change, join a direct call or regular voice channel and speak at your usual volume. Watch for the green speaking indicator around your avatar. It helps show whether Discord is detecting and attempting to transmit your voice during the call.

Why Discord Mic Test Works but Calls Do Not

Mic Test takes sound from the selected microphone and plays it back through the selected output device. Hearing yourself means Discord is receiving a usable microphone signal.

A live call adds more conditions. Discord must know when to transmit your voice, confirm that you are not muted, check whether the channel allows you to speak, and process the audio before sending it. Any of those stages can fail while Mic Test still works.

The symptom pattern can help identify the cause:

• If the microphone fails in every Discord call, focus on input mode, device selection, permissions, and voice settings.

• If it fails in only one server or channel, check server mute and Speak permission.

• If it fails only in the browser, check site permissions and browser limitations.

• If the green indicator appears but one person cannot hear you, the problem may be on that listener’s side.

• If words are cut off rather than completely silent, sensitivity or noise suppression is more likely.

Fix 1: Stop Mic Test and Check Every Mute Control

Discord temporarily mutes and deafens you while Mic Test is running in a voice channel. If the test is still active, you cannot communicate normally in that channel.

Open User Settings, select Voice & Video, and find Mic Test. Select Stop Testing if it is active. Return to the call and make sure the microphone icon near your username is not crossed out.

Check physical controls too. A headset may have a mute switch on the cable or earcup, and some microphone booms mute automatically when raised. Your keyboard or laptop may also have a microphone-mute key.

If the problem happens in only one server, a moderator may have server-muted you. Your own microphone button cannot remove that restriction, so ask a moderator to check your status.

Test the call again. If the green indicator appears and other people hear you, the issue was caused by Mic Test or a mute control rather than the microphone itself.

Fix 2: Switch from Push to Talk to Voice Activity

Voice Activity transmits automatically when Discord detects speech. Push to Talk transmits only while you hold an assigned shortcut.

A microphone can pass Mic Test even when Push to Talk is not activating. Open User Settings, select Voice & Video, choose Voice Activity under Input Mode, and join a call without pressing a key.

If this solves the problem, review the Push to Talk shortcut before switching back. Make sure a key is assigned and that it does not conflict with a game or another application.

In a browser, Push to Talk may work only while the Discord window is focused. It can stop when you switch to another program.

On Windows, a game running with administrator privileges may also prevent a normally running Discord app from detecting the shortcut. The safer approach is to run both programs normally rather than giving Discord elevated access as a permanent fix.

Keep Voice Activity enabled for a full call. If it remains reliable, the Push to Talk setup was probably the cause.

Fix 3: Adjust Voice Activity Sensitivity

Voice Activity uses a sensitivity threshold to separate speech from background noise. If the threshold is too strict, normal speech may not activate transmission even though Mic Test plays it back.

Open User Settings, select Voice & Video, and confirm that Voice Activity is selected. Start with Automatically determine input sensitivity enabled, then test a call at your normal speaking volume.

If Discord still misses your voice, turn off automatic sensitivity and adjust the manual threshold gradually. It should ignore room noise during silence but activate during your quietest normal speech.

Say a complete sentence while watching the green indicator. Do not tap or blow into the microphone because those sounds are much louder than speech and can make a poor sensitivity setting appear successful.

This fix is especially relevant when the first word disappears, quiet speech is cut off, or the green indicator flashes instead of staying active.

Fix 4: Check Server Mute, Speak Permission, and Channel Type

If your Discord microphone works in direct calls or other servers but not in one channel, the problem is probably controlled by that server.

Ask an administrator or moderator to check whether you are server muted, whether your role has Speak permission, and whether the channel has an override that denies speaking.

Connect and Speak are separate permissions. You may be allowed to enter a voice channel and hear everyone while still being unable to talk.

Also check whether you joined a Stage channel. Audience members listen by default and must be invited or approved to speak.

Test a direct-message call or a normal voice channel in another server. If the microphone works there, focus on the affected server rather than reinstalling Discord or changing system settings.

A server mute or denied permission cannot be fixed from your own microphone controls. It must be changed by someone who manages the server.

Fix 5: Select the Exact Microphone Instead of Default

The Default input follows the microphone selected by the operating system. That choice can change when you connect a Bluetooth headset, webcam, controller, USB dock, capture device, or virtual audio tool.

Open User Settings, select Voice & Video, and open Input Device. Choose your microphone by its exact name instead of Default, then set Input Volume to a suitable level. Run Mic Test briefly, stop it, and test a real call.

If several devices have similar names, try them one at a time. Webcams often include microphones, while audio programs may create virtual inputs that resemble physical devices.

Depending on your Discord version, additional input controls may also be available during a call. Make sure any visible call controls use the same microphone selected in Voice & Video.

If the problem occurs only with Bluetooth, test the computer’s built-in microphone or a wired headset. Bluetooth headsets may switch audio modes when two-way communication begins, which can change routing and sound quality.

Fix 6: Disable Noise Suppression and Voice Processing Temporarily

Noise suppression, echo cancellation, and automatic audio processing can sometimes remove soft, distant, distorted, or heavily processed speech.

This is more likely when other people hear only parts of sentences, the first word disappears, or the speaking indicator activates only when you talk loudly.

Open User Settings, select Voice & Video, and turn off Noise Suppression temporarily. Test a call using a normal sentence. If the problem continues, disable other processing options one at a time.

Do not turn everything off at once. Testing one option at a time helps identify the cause and makes it easier to restore useful features later.

Keep the microphone at a steady distance while testing. If complete sentences transmit after processing is disabled, re-enable the options individually until you find the setting that causes the cutout.

Fix 7: Check Microphone Permissions for the App or Browser

The Discord desktop app and discord.com use separate permissions. One version may work while the other is blocked.

Windows

Open Start, Settings, Privacy & security, and Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Then fully quit and reopen Discord.

Discord may not appear with its own individual switch because it is a desktop application. The desktop-app microphone setting still needs to be enabled.

macOS

Open the Apple menu, System Settings, Privacy & Security, and Microphone. Enable Discord or the browser you use, then quit and reopen the affected application.

If Discord is not listed, try joining a call again so macOS can display a permission request.

Browser

Open your browser’s site permissions for discord.com and make sure Microphone is set to Allow. Reload the page and rejoin the call.

In Chrome, you can also open Settings, Privacy and security, Site settings, and Microphone. Confirm that discord.com is not blocked and that the intended microphone is selected.

Both permission levels matter. The website must be allowed to use the microphone, and the browser itself must have microphone permission in Windows or macOS.

Do not disable antivirus software, firewall protection, or system-wide privacy controls. Change only the microphone permission required by the legitimate Discord app or website.

Fix 8: Fully Restart Discord and Compare the App with the Browser

Closing the Discord window may leave the app running in the background with the same audio session or device selection.

On Windows, right-click Discord in the system tray and choose Quit Discord. If necessary, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and close remaining Discord processes in Task Manager. On macOS, use Command + Q.

Reconnect the microphone before reopening Discord, select the exact input, and test a call.

Next, compare the desktop app with discord.com.

If browser calls work but the app does not, focus on the app’s settings or installation. If the app works but the browser does not, check the browser and site permissions.

If both versions fail, check system microphone permissions, the selected input device, and any server restrictions.

Use the same microphone and the same type of call for both tests. Restart the computer if Discord still fails after permission changes, Bluetooth switching, driver updates, or waking from sleep.

Fix 9: Reset Discord Voice and Video Settings

Discord may store a combination of input mode, sensitivity, processing, device, and audio options that no longer works correctly. Resetting Voice and Video settings restores those preferences to their defaults.

Warning: This removes customized Discord audio and video preferences. It should not delete your account, servers, friends, or messages, but you may need to select your devices and recreate voice settings.

Open User Settings, select Voice & Video, find the Debugging section, and choose Reset Voice and Video Settings. Confirm the reset, select your microphone by name, choose Voice Activity, and test a direct call.

Do not restore all previous settings immediately. If the default configuration works, add Push to Talk, noise suppression, sensitivity changes, and other preferences back one at a time. This helps identify which setting caused the failure.

Fix 10: Update Discord, Try Another Audio Subsystem, or Reinstall the App

Use these options only after the simpler checks fail.

Install available Discord and supported operating-system updates. Get microphone drivers only through Windows Update or the device manufacturer’s official website. Avoid third-party driver tools.

Depending on your Discord version and platform, Voice & Video may include an Audio Subsystem setting. If it is available, switch to another option, restart Discord, and test the call again. Some versions or platforms may not show this menu.

Try another physical port as well. Connect a USB microphone directly to the computer rather than an unpowered hub, monitor, or keyboard. For a 3.5 mm headset, confirm that the jack supports microphone input.

If Discord works in a browser but the desktop app still fails after a voice reset, reinstall Discord from its official website.

Warning: A normal reinstall should not remove messages, servers, or other data stored in your Discord account.

Manually deleting Discord application folders can remove local settings and cached data. Avoid doing this unless a standard reinstall fails and you understand what will be deleted.

After reinstalling, use Voice Activity and select the microphone by its exact name for the first test. Try a direct call before returning to the original server.

When to Contact Discord Support

Contact Discord Support when the microphone works in Mic Test and other applications but fails in every Discord call.

Before contacting Support, test Voice Activity, select the microphone by name, check permissions, restart Discord, compare the browser and desktop app, and reset Voice and Video settings.

Include your operating system, Discord version, microphone model, and whether the green speaking indicator appears.

Explain whether the problem affects direct calls, every server, or only one channel. Also list the fixes you already tried.

If the microphone also fails in the operating system’s input test and other applications, the problem is probably not limited to Discord. Check the cable, hardware mute, port, Bluetooth connection, system input settings, and official device software, or contact the manufacturer.

The Fastest Path Back to a Working Discord Call

When a Discord mic works in the test but not in calls, start with the difference between receiving audio and transmitting it. 

Stop Mic Test, unmute yourself, switch to Voice Activity, adjust sensitivity, and confirm that the channel allows you to speak. If you use a wireless headset, also check its Bluetooth pairing.

Next, select the microphone by name, disable processing temporarily, and verify microphone permission for the exact app or browser. 

If the problem includes delayed, broken, or unstable audio rather than complete silence, check your WiFi connection before resetting Voice and Video settings, changing the audio subsystem, or reinstalling Discord.

A successful Mic Test tells you the microphone can reach Discord; the remaining task is finding what prevents Discord from sending it to the call.
